One way to mitigate the expense is to use the leverage of a call option. I bought the Aug 50 call today for 4.38. My timing couldn't have been worse, but Aug espiry is still a month away.

where do we go from here 07/15/08
The S&P has now broken the low of 6/12/06, 1219.29. The next stop is 1168.20 of 10/10/05. The Dow and the Nasdaq are in similar situations. I origanally joined the stock buzz to get some new ideas on trading my options account, however I now believe I can be of some help to all it's members with my actual trading experience. Vulcan's earning have deteriorated the last two quarters and very sharply last quarter. Considering the economic climate I see no reason to see a change. Earnings come 7/30 after the market close and I will be short this stock at least until then.

Earnings on the 22nd will tell the story. I think it's going to be a big miss, I and also think that Jpm will decide on WB over STI. If both occur then this stock could lose another $10 to $12 before it settles. I think by today's move (even when the market was up 100) it being down almost 10% is saying that investors believe this to be the case.
