Where We Stand, a Technical Look at S&P 500
03/27/09
—
I thought it would be a good time to review the chart of the S&P 500 since we've had so much movement in so little time. I try to touch on this during most of the weekend summaries but we are blowing through resistance areas so quickly, updates of thoughts are coming fast and furious.Way back in...
Thesis Buying 101 in Oil - Even "Experts" Mock It
03/27/09
—
I absolutely love this short story on oil prices from the AP, it highlights one of my favorite themes... i.e. thesis buying. So many on Wall Street love to use the excuse that "price action" is "foretelling" some future event; that markets are so efficient and "all knowing of what is coming 6-9 mont...

Bookkeeping: Covering Harley Davidson (HOG)
03/26/09
—
As people drive to Best Buy (BBY) in their 0% down, 0% interest rate Harley Davidson (HOG) to buy Whirpool (WHR) refrigerator's, before they head back home to their 4.65% mortgage rate new homes from Pulte Home (PHM) - they are doing so as they smirk in my general direction. Why do they have so much...

Bookkeeping: Covering Whirpool (WHR) Short
03/26/09
—
I am getting obliterated by bulls who think the consumer is coming back - unemployed Americans must be rushing out to buy refrigerators along with their $5 organic peaches. Boo yah!I'm crying uncle and covering my Whirpool (WHR) short - I have only had this for a day and a half and I got my teeth ki...

Speculation is Back - Solar Time
03/26/09
—
Time to start getting wary again as daytraders start to pounce on low end meat products such as solar. If this continues we might see dry bulk shippers up 50% tomorrow across the board. Or maybe it will be Chinese small caps circa October 2007 when they doubled every 3 days. Chinese solar stocks ...
Bloomberg: Roubini Says Stocks Will Drop as Banks Go Belly Up
03/26/09
—
Sort of funny to see this blurb from Bloomberg since some commentators have been trying to spin Nouriel Roubini's "somewhat constructive" view on Geithner's taxpayer giveaway as "bullish". Nouriel is out to say - not so much. I am a bit confused by his recent focus on his making stock market calls ...

Bookkeeping: Closing PIMCO Strategic Global Government Fund (RCS)
03/26/09
—
I am closing the PIMCO Strategic Global Government Fund (RCS) position because the closed end fund has sort of veered off from my initial reasons for buying. [Oct 31, 2008: Bookkeeping - Starting PIMCO Strategic Global Government Fund]Most importantly is what it owns - it is focused on Fannie Mae, F...
Postal Office in Need of Bailout
03/26/09
—
Whose next in Bailout Nation? As they say on the basketball courts, the Postal Office has stepped up to say "we got next!" Just add it to the tab, our pockets our endless and our Federal Reserve is generous. Put it in TARP... or TALF... or PPIP... or IOU... whatever.I don't know the terms of the P...
WSJ: Singapore's Boomtown Dream Gets Hazy
03/26/09
—
This post perhaps has a limited readership interest, but I am fascinated with the smaller Asian "Tigers" if you will, while the general obsession is with only 1 country: China. We were investing in this group in 2007 and early 2008 but when I started to get itchy about the coming global recession I ...
Smackdown of Gordon Brown by Daniel Hannan
03/25/09

I have no idea who Daniel Hannan is but my gosh man.... epic.I wrote in [Mar 20: Hugh Hendry of Eclectica Asset Management is Wickedly Good]....are a direct parallel to how US Congress works versus UK Parliament: here, people give 2 minute speeches before voting to 90% empty Congressional hall with n...

Bookkeeping: Short Prudential (PRU)
03/25/09
—
After commercial REITs, insurance will be the next big shoe to fall - although government will try harder to save insurance than REITs. There are a bevy of excellent shorts in this group ranging from Prudential (PRU) to Hartford (HIG) to MetLife (MET). Travelers (TRV) is actually a good soldier in ...
Ron Paul: The United States is Bankrupt
03/25/09
—
It is quite sad how so many things Ron Paul has warned of (and was scoffed at, and marginalized as some "loony") have come to pass. We haven't checked in with Paul for a long while [May 14, 2008: Ron Paul Fox Business Interview] [Mar 14, 2008: Ron Paul - Tough Medicine is the Treatment] [Dec 15, 200...

Bookkeeping: Selling Half of Myriad Genetics (MYGN)
03/25/09
—
Myriad Genetics (MYGN) is flushing out a 10% move so I am going to cut half the position here - too early to tell but it is either forming a double top or about to begin a new leg up. If it gets north of $90 and holds I'll leg back in but for now I'm cutting 50% of the position in the $89.20s - appa...
WFMI
Bookkeeping: Covering Whole Foods Market (WFMI)
03/25/09
—
That was quick - I am out of the Whole Foods Market (WFMI) short we started yesterday with a smart 8% loss, selling in the $17.60s. The retail names are definitely seeing a big rotation by hot money so its best not to fight the trend. We saw this same "anticipatory" rotation multiple times in 2008 ...
Taxpayer Welfare to the "System" $3 Trillion Down, $9 Trillion to Go
03/25/09
—
A quite awesome infographic courtesy of nicholasrapp.com. It is very easy to get lost in the massive amount of numbers and soon you become numb. We have $12 Trillion Spent or Promised (Backstops in place)... effectively the Federal Reserve has become the "shadow banking system". And is now turning...

ProLogis (PLD) Impaled Despite Asset Sale
03/25/09
—
You know there are problems with your business when your stock is hammered despite doing something that appears to be very positive on the surface. I covered some ProLogis (PLD) (one of our 4 REITs) into the close yesterday as the stock was down 15%sh. This would be the 3rd round trip in just over ...
Doug Kass: Why the Bears are Wrong
03/24/09
—
Doug Kass believes the 666 S&P low was not only this bear market's bottom; but also a "generational" low. As always we are open to hearing both sides of the arguement and unlike most of the punditry Doug actually puts his money behind his mouth. He did make an excellent call for a bottom a few ...

I have been in the market in some form since being a teenager, first with mutual funds, than onto to stocks. Now it is 20 years later. It has been a passion of mine, and as any investor, I've had my ups, downs, and tuition extracted from learning the ins and outs. "If I only knew then..." and I continue to learn each day. I have a BA in economics from the University of Michigan (Go Blue!), and work in finance (not related to Wall St). Obviously my goal is to work in investment management, so that I don't need to "work" another day of my life.
