MEMC Electronic Materials (WFR) this afternoon reduced its Q4 revenue guidance to $500 million, plus or minus $25 million, with gross margins of 48%, plus or minus two points. Previously, the company had forecast revenue of $540 million to $600 million, with gross margin of over 50%. The company now sees operating expenses in the quarter of $27 million, down from $41 million, due to a decrease in stock compensation expenses relating to options forfeiture by former CEO Nabeel Gareeb, who announced his resignation late last month.

MEMC Electronic Materials (WFR) shares are down sharply today after Collins Stewart analyst Dan Ries cut his rating on the polysilicon manufacturer to Hold from Buy, just a week after he started coverage of the company with a more bullish stance.

“Checks indicate spot polysilicon prices declined sharply last week and the outlook for semiconductors has deteriorated,” he notes. Ries says that checks late last week find that polysilicon prices “have fallen much more drastically in recent weeks than we had forecast.”
