A great financial ETF that got hammered in the collapse. A comeback to somewhere remotely close to its last year high of 25$ is inevitable. Even going to 15$ from its current 4.59$ would be incredible. Its got no where to go but up.

The S&P 500 closed at 768.54 down 15.50 (1.98%).  If the S&P 500 breaks below 760, we could see a move down to 740.  The Dow closed at 7278.38 down 122.42 (1.65%)  The Russell 1000 closed at 417.54 down 8.69 (2.04%).  The Russell 2000 closed at 400.11 down 13.15 (3.18%). 

Next week will decide the extent of this short-term pullback.  With March 31 fast approaching, I would expect to see all the markets make a nice move off the lows which will probably occur some time next week.

The financial sector appears to have bottomed over the last couple of days.  House hearings on Mark to Market accounting are scheduled for Thursday.  If there is any hint of suspension or repeal of Mark to Market accounting will send the financial sector into a nice short-term rally.  If they reinstated the uptick rule that would be icing on the cake.  The only negative is that the Treasury Secretary is scheduled to appear before Congress and anytime he speaks it seems to trigger a negative response in the markets.

Its hard not to sell the rally. We may get an up day or two but it won't be long before we are back in the soup again. Sell early and sell often.

SKF versus the VIX
In my semi-rant about leveraged ETFs from Monday, I mentioned that the 2X ETFs can be held for longer than one day, especially when volatility is moderate to low. This post takes a closer look at this proposition.

At least for this week, the market was in like a lion on Monday and out like a lamb today.

S&P 500: This Week

Still, we closed above key supports and strong weekly returns. For the week, the S&P 500 gained +6.17%, Dow +6.84%, Nasdaq +6.03, and the Russell 2000 +7.22%.

To make big money this week you had to be long home construction (ITB), clean energy (PBW), industrials (UXI), financials (UYG), and basic materials (UYM). However, if it was your goal to lose money, being leveraged short was the clear choice as big losses were seen in financials (SKF), real estate (SRS), & telecom (TLL).
