SAN FRANCISCO: Yahoo Inc said it would cut 5 percent of its global workforce and reported a quarterly profit that met Wall Street expectations, sending shares up 4.5 percent in a relief rally.

The Internet company said economic conditions remained challenging, as revenue from advertising on Yahoo websites and its partner websites declined during the first quarter.
