I have added silver exposure via SLW to my portfolio as a hedge against two possible scenarios:  "insurance" against a devaluing dollar, and "insurance" against rising inflation.  I picked SLW instead of the silver metal itself because silver (and gold) are taxed as collectibles, which is a higher tax rate, even if you hold them long term, whereas SLW could be elegible for long term capital gains taxes if held long enough.
