Currently, 50% of the electricity generated in North America comes from burning coal. While China currently generates 80% of its electricity from coal. There is enough coal left on the planet to last another 230 years. Since 2000, the price of coal has risen from $30 per tonne to around $120 per tonne. The Chinese are paying twice as much for coal now than they did a year ago.

Coal was one of our best performing sector groups in latter 2007 through summer 2008. While much of the focus of late has been on natural gas, the coal stocks have been ripping in even larger magnitude. I was a bull on coal over natural gas (although the market in its student body left trading simply moves all commodities together) because of the portability of coal over natural gas. Earnings Drive Coal Stocks

Coal stocks had a big day on Friday driven by James River Coal Company's (JRCC) bullish earnings. In fact, JRCC had a massive volume day (5x normal) and on a weekly chart broke out of previous resistance on the price by volume bars (seen below). It’s bumping right up against its 200 day MA on a daily chart, so it may find a little resistance, but these stocks have the potential to run and not look back.

Other stocks in this sector are Patriot Coal Corp (PCX), Foundation Coal Holdings (FCL), Peabody Energy (BTU), Alpha Natural Resources (ANR), and Massey Energy (MEE) to name a few.
