As I reluctantly start packing my bags after a most enjoyable two weeks of R&R in Europe (see my posts on Slovenia and Switzerland), “Words from the Wise” comes to you a bit more cryptically than usual. Not All Alternate Energy ETFs Were Created Equal


A few months ago, I conducted analyses of the wind and solar power ETFs. I've recently turned my attention to the general alternative energy ETFs, or those that span several sectors.

The general alt energy ETFs fall into two categories: 1) US Only and 2) Global. The US Only ETFs are the First Trust NASDAQ Clean Edge US Liquid (QCLN) and the PowerShares Clean Energy (PBW). The Global ETFs are the iShares S&P Global Clean Energy Index ETF (ICLN), the PowerShares Global Clean Energy Portfolio (PBD) and the Van Eck Global Alternative Energy Fund (GEX).

At least for this week, the market was in like a lion on Monday and out like a lamb today.

S&P 500: This Week

Still, we closed above key supports and strong weekly returns. For the week, the S&P 500 gained +6.17%, Dow +6.84%, Nasdaq +6.03, and the Russell 2000 +7.22%.

To make big money this week you had to be long home construction (ITB), clean energy (PBW), industrials (UXI), financials (UYG), and basic materials (UYM). However, if it was your goal to lose money, being leveraged short was the clear choice as big losses were seen in financials (SKF), real estate (SRS), & telecom (TLL).

These are interesting times in the economy and the stock market. Last week's 4 day rally was slowed down by this week's slight declines as the market is trying to consolidate one of the biggest rallies of 2007. The rally was originally set off by higher expectations of a Fed rate cut on its upcoming December 11th meeting, combined with highly oversold market conditions. Investors expect rates to be cut based on worsening economic conditions. If inflation is on the rise, however, the Fed might not cut rates as much, or not at all, and maintain its position on preventing rampant inflation. Th...
