NetApp (NTAP) this afternoon posted revenue for its fiscal second quarter ended October of $912 million, with earnings of 28 cents a share. That was ahead of the Street at $904.6 million and 27 cents.

The company said that due to “reduced visibility caused by the recent changes in the macroeconomic environment, NetApp will not be providing formal revenue guidance for the third quarter of fiscal year 2009.” NetApp said gross margins in the quarter will be flat with Q2, as will non-GAAP operating expenses.

NTAP, which in the regular session fell $1.29, or 11%, to $10.39, has bounced back 16 cen

J.P. Morgan’s new hardware analyst Mark Moskowitz this morning has rejiggered the firm’s ratings on the sector.

Upgrades: He boosts both Apple (AAPL) and IBM (IBM) to Overweight from Neutral.

Downgrades: He cuts Dell (DELL) and NetApp (NTAP) to Neutral from Overweight; he chops Lexmark (LXK) to Underweight from Neutral.

NetApp (NTAP) CEO Daneil Warmenhoven told Business Week that the company’s sales for the year “won’t be anywhere near” its projected growth rate, Briefing.com noted in an item today. NTAP previously had said it expected 15% growth for the fiscal year ending May 2009.

The item says that Warmenhoven is moving the company into a more defensive position, rather than just focusing on gaining market share.

NTAP shares have also been hurt today by the earnings warning this morning from SAP

NTAP today is down $1.49, or 9.3%, to $14.55.

Adding fuel to the raging fire on which stock valuations are now burning, SAP (SAP) Co-CEO Henning Kagermann this morning warned in a statement that market developments of the last few weeks have been “dramatic and worrying to many businesses,” which has triggered a “very sudden and expected drop in business activity” late in the company’s third quarter.
