We have finally reached a point where all denial is gone and we are ready to admit the error of our ways. Sure, there were plenty of folks ringing the alarm bells years ago, but universal acceptance of the fundamental economic calamity that faces us from every corner of the world, and every person with two cents to rub together, has just now ...

The following two-part article puts forth ten stock ideas that I believe would be better off in your investment portfolio than one comprised primarily of Certificates of Deposits (CDs) or bonds, or even government treasuries. This is not to say that these do not have value or offer some level of security, but they are long term losers.
A basket of high yielding-high quality stocks can offer a higher return

Market Overview: Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNI), Google (GOOG)
Friday’s selloff saw the Dow stumble 1.22%, the S &P fall 0.8% and the Nasdaq trading down 0.3%. Guy Adami says the market hasn’t bottomed yet, but continues to like railroad stocks like BNI as well as natural gas. Najarian noted Google’s spectacular $40 drop and said the tech horsemen need a rest. Jeff Macke wouldn’t buy stocks unless they fall on a panic. The group looked at the Volatility Index and Najarian said when there
4/30 - "Last week the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Consumption (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) recommended approval of Tredaptive (formerly Cordaptive), Merck’s combination extended-release niacin with a novel flushing inhibitor (a prostaglandin D2 antagonist). However, FDA issued a Not Approvable, likely owing to safety concerns with the product; we are therefore reducing our estimates."
"Niacin-based therapies have been available for some time as both a food supplement and an ethical pharmaceutical, but their utilization remains marginal compared to other li...
3/31 - "Zetia/Vytorin Sales Estimates Reduced — We believe that today’s outcome will have a meaningfully negative impact on the prescribing habits in the US, and, to a lesser extent, in non-US markets. Consequently, our 2007-10E cholesterol franchise sales CAGR decreases to -3% (previously +4%) for WW sales and - 11% (previously -2%) for US sales."
"We believe the panel’s recommendation to shift the therapeutic focus away from Zetia creates a real need for viable alternatives in the cholesterol reduction market. This may potentially expand the opportunity for MRK’s Cordaptive, and mitigate...
my decision for MRK is based upon broken promises. by this i mean, (MRK) Don't announce that you have some kind of aids drug in the works if the probablility of success is next to nothing. another pharmaceutical co. will eventually capitalize off of this mistake. by all means, there is still a future for this co.i just would wait for the drop to buy again.
Merck's going through some bad times because of the Vioxx litigation but this is a legacy company that is built to weather such storms and come out of the other side leaner and meaner than its competitors. Merck has a significant drug which is a vaccination for the HPV virus that causes genital warts and cervical cancer. It has passed clinical trials and is ramping up for mass marketing. This is a multi-billion dollar global market which will help the company's 5-year growth prospects and position it better for growth in the next decade through major acquisitions.
