MON: Bull or Bear?
The other Hugh Grant

A few months ago the other hugh grant offered up a doubling of profits over the next 4 years. GM crops are becoming more and more prevalent in todays society. With most regulatory concerns addressed and the WHO's constant reminder that we don't have enough food for the entire world, what has been dragging this stock down lately? I think Goldman-Sachs put a target of about 140 on the stock last year. I don't think that is too unreasonable. Are most investors balking right now because of the P/E ratio?

Monsanto (MON) - Good Results, Expectations Very High

Monsanto (MON) reported very good results this morning, although a bit light on the revenue line - expectations just are so high for this name and at 40x forward estimates it's a quite rich valuation. Fortunately to offset the light top line number, they raised earnings guidance for the year which is helping to support the name to a degree in pre-market. For stocks priced to perfection you need to hit on all cylinders and a perceived revenue "miss" would of dropped the stock a bit more, but the raised guidance will help offset any major long term worries.

Is Monsanto Really a Tech Play?

On December 27th of last year I made a call on Monsanto (MON) at $112.43 per share on theupdown.com and since is up 26.86%. There was plenty of static with the call as the name had already had a pretty good run up. I have owned it in my brokerage account since it traded for $66.13. Even at this price I still believe the stock is a long term play on world agricultural technologies. Its hard to believe on March 10th of 2003 this stock sold for just $7.03 a share. These types of runs are generally not long lived, and investors have lost huge sums of money not taking any ...

The crazy and often deplorable and runaway rise in food prices have given companies like Monsanto a great run. But there has been outrage all over the world and there are countries where middle class people are facing such a crisis that they are going to die of hunger. This is quite a serious thing and such outrage and concern is likely to slow the rise in prices of food the world over. This would have an adverse effect on the stock price of this company. This is why I am bearish on this company in the next one year. I am sure the world leaders would do something to cool down the overheated...

Monsanto: Growing Earnings

As someone who is not afraid to point out what is wrong with the economy today, it is refreshing for me to be able to write about what is working well in corporate America. If the United States is going to solve its current account imbalances and boost its G.D.P. to rival the world's growth rate, domestic corporations may need to take a lesson by turning their ears (pun intended) towards a company like Monsanto (MON). What we do best in this country is technological innovation, and there are few enterprises that exemplify that better than the world's largest company focused on seeds and tra ...

Monsanto (MON) is by far the world's largest leading producer of bioengineered crops. In fact, the company's market share is so huge that experts estimate that Monsanto has developed 70% of the world's insect- and herbicide-resistant crops. Do you realize what this means? That's like having a 70% market share in the one commodity that every human being on Earth needs to survive—FOOD. When you add the fact that demand for ethanol is putting powerful upward pressure on the price of corn, you can see why the company is about to hit the jackpot again as sales to China and India ...

Filed under: Stocks to Buy, Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan (POT) Farmers are paying more for supplies to grow their crops and they're passing those rising costs onto consumers. The Wall Street Journal reports that farmers paid 65% more for fertilizer in April 2008. Fuel, the second-fastest rising cost, is up 43%. And seed prices have risen 30%. But you can hedge your rising food costs by investing in companies that profit from rising fertilizer prices.
Farmers say too much market power is concentrated in the hands of a small group of companies in the U.S., Canada and Russia that dominate global ...

I went short 100 shares of MON at $120.76. Rather than analyze the trade setup as I have been doing, I'd like to take a look at MON's weekly chart. It's starting to look like a top might be forming.
Take a look at the price action. For the fist time in two years, the trend is stalling and we are starting to see a volatile, 30 point range forming. This by itself is not a sure fire bearish signal
