I haven’t written about MercadoLibre in a while. On Wednesday, Eric Savitz, over at Barrons, reported that its CEO Marcos Galperin terminated an over 1.7 million shares stock sale plan, which sent the stock up $4.44, or 16.6 percent, to $31.23.

MercadoLibre (NASD: MELI), the combination of eBay (EBAY) and Amazon (AMZN) of Latin America, announced its Q1 earnings a couple of months ago. With revenues of $28.8 million, the company recorded 75% growth over the previous year and 7% growth sequentially despite the seasonal impact of Easter in the quarter. What a day - rarely do you get four 15%+ movers. Mercadolibre (MELI) which has been hit with the ugly stick (I've stuck with it), is rallying from a very oversold level on news the CEO won't be selling a 1.8 million load of stock. Analysts are happy. Myself, I am sort of getting tired of this stock since either they are doing a proposed share dilution and that kills the stock or their management gets greedy (like all good public companies) and showers the public with shares so they can buy their 18th house.... err, I mean fund a good college education for their children. MELI is up 7.2% today. I bought at $36.65 on Feb. 5 (34% ago). We're passing the highs established in Nov and Dec 2007, which is positive. The last 10 days provided $10 on this move! I have no reason to sell and plan to hold.

MELI was whacked to day for reasons that are not entirely clear to me. It has now come down to what I think is a very reasonable valuation considering its tremendous growth potential. It is the E-Bay of South America, a rapidly developing, populous part of the world. E-Bay owns a big chunk of it. E-Bay is in the doghouse lately, but go look at the long-term chart on E-Bay and think how much you could have made if you got in early.
