Sun’s shares had slumped to a new post-bubble low at the end of last week as investors grew concerned that the worsening economic outlook, and turmoil in the financial services industry where Sun makes many of its sales, would further hold back any recovery at the troubled maker of servers and storage equipment, meanwhile the stock fall nearly 20 per cent in a week. According to Sun's chief executive officer Jonathan Schwartz the company is expected to report revenues for the quarter of $3.725-3.8bn, a slight decline from the $3.835bn of a year before, with pro-forma earnings per s...

I am quite surprised to see Sun Microsystems lying pretty low. This should qualify as a good contrary bet in the stock markets. I have always been impressed a lot by the ability of Sun Microsystems to grow as a company. I understand that some of the core businesses of this company aren't doing very well and that there is increasing competition but that is no reason for the stock to be beaten down completely. This is a classic case of the stock markets and the depressed sentiment in the markets beating down a stock below its intrinsic value. I see a 40-50% upside in this stock in the next on...

Sun Microsystems last night after the close reported a third quarter loss that stunned Wall Street analyst who had been looking for an 18 cent profit. The company reported losing 4 cents a share compared to making 8 cents a share a year earlier. A very good example of the need to be cautious with your positions at a companies earnings announcement.

Not really sure where the stock is going to go, but the MySQL acquisition leaves a bad taste in my mouth. $1 billion for a company with its business model based on providing support. Are you kidding?

Sun is acquiring tasteful choices in companies (such as MySQL) that will further its enterprise in the database market. It will catch up with companies such as Oracle in this field. In so doing, it will become highly profitable and become a very successful company. It is already known for its core product, Java, and its unrivaled server products. MySQL and its other acquisitions that may be in the pipeline for 2008 (and how it will handle its database product acquisitions) will be very interesting. I think Sun will come out of the clouds with its head held high above Oracle, and the...

Strong Earnings, Subdued Inflation Report Boost Market In Early Trading

The market staged a big rally in the first hour of trading, but it is already started to give most of it back. Now you know why I dislike strong opens. Sun Micro (SUNW) and GM both posted strong earnings, but it was the inflation news that really sparked the rally. The Fed's favorite inflation indicator, the core PCE , came in at +0.1% (consensus +0.2%). This leaves the year/year rate at 1.9%, well withing the Fed's "comfort zone". This could make it more palatable for the Fed to cut rates, if and when. Asian markets rose sharply overnight, save for Japan wh...

Sun Microsystem posted a profit in the third quarter, matching expectations, but shares dropped on concerns about lower-than-expected revenue. Its net income was $67 million, that compares with a loss of $217 million in the period a year ago. Revenues for the quarter were $3.28 billion, a slight increase from the $3.18 billion recorded in the year-ago period, but short of the $3.42 billion expected. <> After the breakout of the trendline, SUNW has developed a flag. The breakout to the downside has occurred in the form of a big gap. Although there could a congestion ph>...

this is a topic talked about at several places including here (Jonathan) and here (Red Monk) all of which are perfect arguments ?
A point I felt that was not clearly articulated in my earlier readings was that I look at open source as just a different Market Capture Strategy.
You have a choice today. Do you want to spend millions in Marketing and Sales of your product or do you want to spend those millions into the product and follow the route of Bottom up marketing. ( and refer : death of cold calling)
Refer to what an a CEO of Major insurance carrier says regarding barriers to entry. I shal...

- I think JAVA's acquisition of MySQL is very important. It is likely that Social Picks is powered by MySQL, as well as thousands of popular websites.
