Filed under: Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A), Duke Energy (DUK), Chasing Value, Stocks to Buy, Southern Company (SO), National Grid (NGG) Four weeks ago, I made the argument that National Grid (NGG) might be on Warren Buffet's radar screen as a foreign acquisition. The strategic benefits, depressed stock price and yield all made it look like a good fit.
Ten days ago, Barron's trumpeted National Grid, a British company traded on the NYSE, for all the same reasons, absent the merger and acquisition possibilities.
So last week I bought NGG on a dip as a value proposition and if by some miracle <>"my pal>...

Filed under: Indices, Money and Finance Today, Consolidated Edison (ED), Duke Energy (DUK), Serious Money, S and P 500, DJIA, Stocks to Buy, Southern Company (SO), NASDAQ, Xcel Energy (XEL), Northeast Utilities (NU) We can make this short and sweet: buying utilities pays off in many ways that other investments do not. Utilities pay regular dividend distributions that are higher than most stocks, bonds, Treasuries, and certificates of deposit. In these volatile times, utility stocks add stability to your portfolio and moderate the wild swings. And, here is the kicker that everyone but day tra...

Filed under: Good news, Market matters, Getting started, Diageo plc (DEO), Abbott Laboratories (ABT), Automatic Data Proc (ADP), ConocoPhillips (COP), Duke Energy (DUK), Serious Money, Oil, Stocks to Buy, Financial Crisis The market may be entering a more volatile period or it may just go sideways for a while. The last few weeks the market has been down. Maybe it is because the rapid rise mid-March through mid-June is forcing people to stop and take a breadth, or perhaps it is because investors are having second thoughts about whether the "green shoots" Ben Bernanke spoke of in regards to a ...

Filed under: Duke Energy (DUK), Stocks to Buy With the markets still in a choppy/consolidation mode (or perhaps worse), it's best to consider including a few defensive stocks in your portfolio, and with the above in mind Duke Energy is worth an evaluation.
If you're looking for a balanced, longer-term utilities play, consider Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK).
Duke is that rare type of utility that offers investors an ample amount of safety, an adequate dividend, and the potential for capital gain upside via growth.
In general, analysts expect DUK to register solid revenue results in 2008-2009. Duke ha...

After spinning off its gas subsidary, its concentration is solely on electricity. I'm kind of confused about the wind power, but heh... what do i know about making electricity. Whatever makes electricity in turn makes money for Duke. And if Duke's making money, I am too. Good Price. Excellent Fundamentals. Great Management. I just read Duke's 2006 10-K and I'm very stoked about this company. They practice what they preach.
