If you have ever watched a sporting event in HD you will want HD channels.  DTV has aggressively added HD programming and has aggressively signed contracts with sports organizations.  Better than Comcast or Dish Network.  You have to love subscription businesses for their steady cash flow especially if their subscriber base continue to grow.

Portfolio Update: DirecTV Merges with Liberty Entertainment; Dumping Remaining Liberty Media Tracking Stocks

The planned merger of Liberty Entertainment into DirecTV Group (DTV) has been completed. This results in DTV being back up to 9% of my portfolio, even after selling half of my original DTV stake when it doubled in price. For now I'm holding, believing John Malone will engineer something further rewarding shareholders. A sale to AT&T or another company is a definite possibility.

Liberty Media / DirecTV Merger Closes (I Plan to Hold Both for Now)

Last Thursday, shareholders of Liberty Media Entertainment (LMDIA) and DirecTV (DTV) formally approved the merger between the two companies. The merger closed Thursday night. Many Northlake clients owned shares in LMDIA. Each share of LMDIA is now one share of DTV. In addition, for every ten shares of LMDIA, shareholders received one share of Liberty Starz (LSTZA).

For example, if a Northlake client owned 500 shares of LMDIA they would now own 500 shares of DTV and 50 shares of LSTZA. Any fractional shares of LSTZA will be paid in cash.

Liberty Media (LINTA) Chairman John Malone today effectively invited Verizon (VZ) and AT&T (T) to make an offer for DirecTV (DTV), the satellite broadcasting he controls.
