American prisoners will be considered an important part of the new manufacturing economy we have seen discussed in teh news.

On a global scale it is clear that wages are the primary drain on operating profits for any business. The new prison profiteers will provide labor at lower costs than thought possible and the expansion of this infrastructure will create an inherent boom. The spread between prison wages and the minimum wage will be a major issue in the following years, and a major source of protected profit.

With the jails filling up with his colleagues, William Ackman has decided to invest in incarceration.

Ackman’s activist hedge fund shop, Pershing Square Asset Management, has taken a 9.5% stake in private prison company Corrections Corp. of America (CXW). While Ackman joked that it's a “hedge against your hedge fund business… as the SEC ramps up” its investigations into the industry, he told the Value Investing Congress that his investment had less to do with reforming criminals and more to do with real estate.
