Chevron is down from highs more than Exxon, but only by a little. But their capex spending in the past 4 years has been almost double Exxon's in terms of revenues. I believe mgt continues to invest capex (capacity) this year, in high-cost areas (for example but necessarily in this case: oil sands, deep ocean...etc...) With oil dropping to $30 from $140s, oil companies should have taken the indicator and stopped spending on capex. For some reason, oil people seem to think their commodity doesn't really go down, reminds me of Manhattanites thinking their island didn't allow falling price...

ExxonMobil Corporation (XOM) on Tuesday said it has found hydrocarbons while drilling on the Dabakan-1 well in Service Contract 56 in the Sulu Sea off southern Philippines.

The data captured by Exxon stated that the company encountered reservoir sands and hydrocarbons at the time of drilling the well. The company expects the well to be drilled further to a total depth of approximately 5,000 meters. Upon completion, this will be the deepest well in the Philippines. Exxon plans to drill another well in Dabakan shortly. The estimated drilling cost of each well is $100 million.

Higher Inventory Drags Down Oil – Analyst Blog

The U.S. Energy Department's weekly inventory release showed a surprise buildup in crude stockpiles. The agency’s bearish report further added that gasoline supplies rose much more than analysts projected, while refinery rates remained at historically low levels. The only saving grace came in the form of distillates, whose stocks were down more than expected.  

The federal government’s Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported a 2.1 million barrel rise in crude inventories for the week ending November 27, as against analyst expectations of a drawdown.
