The pawnbroker business has some of the fattest margins out there: 25% on loans, 50% on items sold, and 25% on cash advances. November and December are their busiest months due to the need to raise cash for holiday spending. Legal hindrances have created significant barriers to entry for new competitors leaving those who are already in this space to further consolidate.

July 09 updates to my DSP portfolio
|
|
|
I continue to make positive strides in my DSP portfolio. Here is an update on how my portfolio has done since my last post in May.
<>
As with May, Oshkosh and Office Depot continue to be the leaders with the best returns. Texas Instruments has also turned a corner for the positive. Paychex is the only investment that has struggled since May.
As my previous post stated, I also added Cash America International (CSH) to my DSP portfolio, however, with only tw>...

Finding Value in the Payday Loan Sector
I wanted to take a look at the undervalued payday loan sector and see if crunching numbers might reveal something behind the overall state of the sector. So I put the companies side by side and ran some basic calculations. The companies in the sector are First Cash Financial Services (FCFS), EZCorp (EZPW), Cash America (CSH), QC Holdings (QCCO), Dollar Financial (DLLR) and the venerable Advance America (AEA).

Back then I was also considering investing in DSP plans in the financial sector, such as WAMU, BOA, Lehman Brothers. Am I glad I did not step into any of those direct stock plans.
However, the market deterioration since last July has not deterred me from continuin...
