Railroad stocks are steaming ahead today on news that Warren Buffett will buy Burlington Northern (NYSE: BNI ) as a bet on the recovery of the domestic and global economy as part of Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE: BRK-A) largest acquisition ever. Berkshire previously owned over 22% of BNI and will also conduct a 50 : 1 split of his Company's lower-priced Class B shares (NYSE: BRK-B). Buffett is also bullish on the railroad industry as a green form of fuel / cost-effective means for the transportation of goods as compared to other forms of transport such as roadway trucking.

Arkansas Best: Small Cap Trucker Set to Go the Distance

Relative to the railroads, the trucking industry has fallen off the radar screen. Berkshire's Burlington (BNI) buy didn't help. To make matters worse, the trucking industry has driven off a cliff with plummeting freight volumes and falling prices. Despite these troubles, there is reason for optimism. Warren Buffett, the CEO and Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A)/(BRK.B), announced on Thursday to borrow $8 billion of loan for the acquisition of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (BNI). Berkshire Hathaway, which already owns a 22% stake in Burlington Northern, announced earlier this month it would acquire the rest for a total value of $34 billion. Buffet agreed to pay $100 a share in cash and stock to buy the rest of the company.

The $8 billion loan that will be provided by JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and Wells Fargo (WFC) is intended to be paid back in three years’ time.
