Filed under: Earnings Reports, Stocks to Buy Biogen Idec (BIIB) improved its bullish prospects today as it announced earnings of $1.31 per share -- well above the Wall Street consensus estimate of $1.12 -- and raised its 2010 earnings outlook.
Total revenue for last quarter -- thanks in large part to better-than-expected sales of Biogen's multiple sclerosis drug Avonex -- came in at $1.2 billion, up 11% year over year. Perhaps most exciting, however, was Biogen's announcement that it is raising its guidance for 2010 earnings to $4.70 per share, up from the current consensus of $4.57. <><>Continue r>>...

Biotech no longer a safe haven: Elan (ELN) falls on hard times

Filed under: Pfizer (PFE), Newsletters, Merck and Co (MRK), Stocks to Sell It's been a tough year for many industries -- there's no denying it. Retailers of all stripes, oil companies, construction firms, financials, basic materials companies -- you name it, it's down.
So, are there any safe havens? Historically, in times of economic uncertainty the pharmaceutical industry, along with consumer staples, is often the "go to" place where, at a minimum, you can count on a nice dividend yield to shield your portfolio from gigantic losses. Not anymore. <>In this downturn even stalwarts such as Merck (>...

<> The biotech industry is rapidly consolidating as big pharma companies put their cash stash to use in deals ranging from well-known large caps all the way down to unknown micro-caps in an effort to bolster their range of marketed products, late stage pipeline candidates, and drug discovery technology platforms. Biogen-Idec, Elan: Panic Selling Creates Interesting Opportunity

In July, Biogen-Idec (BIIB) and Elan (ELN), who co-market the multiple sclerosis drug Tysabri, announced two new cases of PML, a potentially deadly side effect. The stocks sold-off almost entirely. Biogen-Idec lost about 30% of its market share while Elan has lost over two thirds of its value.
I had previously recommended shares of Biogen-Idec right after the buyout rumors vanished and the stock was trading around 54. I had based that recommendation on the potential success of Tysabri.
