Overall holiday spending this year could be down high-single digits to low double digits versus Xmas 2007, according to a new survey by J.P. Morgan.

Imran Khan, Morgan’s Internet analyst, asserts that e-commerce spending this season will be about flat with last year. That’s pretty consistent with recent findings from comScore, which found a 4% drop in year-over-year online spending for the first 23 days of November.

Tim Boyd, an analyst at American Technology Research, thinks he has a solution for what ails shares of Bidz.com (BIDZ): a company-engineered short squeeze.

Boyd notes that through yesterday the stock was down more than 60% since the company posted Q3 financial results, which included weaker-than-expected Q4 guidance. He figures the decline reflects a combination of “longs bailing and shorts piling on.” Boyd notes that the short interest in the stock was 2.5 million shares at October 31, but that the number has likely “jumped materially” over the last two weeks.

Bidz.com (BIDZ) shares have taken a big hit today, on investor disappointment with both Q3 results and the company’s full year guidance.

As I noted in a post yesterday, the company reported Q3 profits that were ahead of guidance, while revenues were toward the low end of the forecast range. But the company cut its full-year revenue forecast to $215 million to $225 million, from its previous guidance of $240 million to $245 million. Full year EPS guidance remains 56-59 cents.

For Q3, the Web-based jewelery auctineer posted revenue of $55.4 million and profits of 13 cents a share; the Street had expected $55.89 million and 11 cents. BIDZ had forecast revenue of $55 million to $58 million and profits for the quarter of 10-11 cents.

For the full year, BIDZ now sees revenue of $215 million to $225 million, down from its previous guidance of $240 million to $245 million. EPS guidance remains 56-59 cents.

American Technology Research analyst Tim Boyd this morning cut his earnings estimates and target price for Bidz.com (BIDZ), while maintaining his Buy rating on the online jewelry auction site.

Boyd notes that the company reports results on Monday; he expects BIDZ to meet the Street estimates of $55.9 million in revenue, $5 million in pre-tax income and EPS of 11 cents a share. Boyd says his checks find the company was on track to meet or exceed results through mid-September, but that “the meltdown in global financial markets resulted in a weak end to the quarter.”
