Aircastle Ltd (AYR) came out with 2nd quarter earnings pretty much as expected. This is actually very positive after the turmoil around the stock back in June. At that time the stock was hit by the double whammy of worries about financial companies and record oil prices put anything related to airlines into a tailspin. Since Aircastle leases commercial aircraft the market pushed the stock down to as low as $7.79. Neither of these worries have had any actual effect on the company’s operations and revenue growth continues nicely.

Aircastle Ltd. (AYR) caught my eye in March when the company slashed its quarterly dividend from 70¢ per share to 25¢. This was after 6 straight dividend increases from 16¢ to the earlier mentioned 70¢. The stock had peaked at about $40 last summer and had been declining steadily, with the downward slope steepening just before the dividend slash announcement.<!---->

    This is really an interest rate spread play.  The company buys new planes, floats a security backed by these planes at a favorable rate, and then leases the planes to airlines and freight carriers at a higher rate of return.  Excess cash flow over the amount needed for fleet expansion are then payed back to investors as a large dividend, similar to the dry bulk shipping sector.  Visibility is great as basically all their planes are spoken for long term deals. They already expected to expand fleet again in 2008 and the fed rate cuts have gauraunteed favorable terms.
