On Tuesday August 26, Amylin (AMLN) and its partner Eli Lilly (LLY) announced that four patients had died while on diabetes treatment Byetta.

Both Amylin (down 12%) and Lilly (down 1%) sold off in after hours following repeated headlines saying Byetta was responsible for the deaths.

I've been stating for a while now that this market has changed character - even as the bear market hit us in the winter we were still able to find pockets of strength where buying breakouts were rewarded. However, at this time instead of buying breakouts, the course of action appears to be (mostly) to buy the broken down stocks and wait for the rebound. Unfortunately you have to sell the rebound as well - since if it lasts too long it turns into a breakout. Which means it's doomed to fail. ;)

I'm following the "buy the busted stocks" instead of breakouts methodology, but breaking a rule on buying individual biotech stocks with today's purchase of Amylin Pharmaceuticals (AMLN). This is one of the few biotechs I know pretty well, and have followd for quite a while - mostly due to its diabetes drug Byetta. Which is the cause of the recent ruckus - on Monday the FDA warned that Byetta might be linked to 6 severe cases of pancreatitis.

Amylin and Mallinckrodt amended their manufacturing agreement dated October 1, 2003, pursuant to which Mallinckrodt manufactures and supplies to Amylin bulk exenatide, the active ingredient in BYETTA injection. Under the terms of the Amendment, the termination date of agreement has been extended for a period of four years to September 30, 2012.
