Chinese online gaming company NetEase (NTES) today signed a deal to license the online games StarCraft II, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne from Activision Blizzard (ATVI). Netease also will license Battle.net, an online multiplater service for those games.

That may not be big news to you if your not playing online games in China, but it seems to be disturing holders of The9 Ltd. (NCTY), another China-based online gaming provider. Standard & Poor’s analyst Scott Kessler notes that the NetEase deal with Activision is spooking investors in NCTY, which licenses Activision Blizzard’s World of Warcraft game in China. Kessler thinks the worry is overdone, and that ATVI “clearly signaled” last week that its relationship with NCTY is “gaining strength.” He contends the NCTY sell off today is “an enhanced buying opportunity.”
