It shouldn’t come as a surprise, but the online video boom is helping Cisco Systems sell a lot of its top-of-the-line CRS-1 routers.

The San Jose-based router and switch maker said that the total global cumulative shipments of CRS-1 Routers have doubled in less than nine months, rising from a total of 900 units shipped through June 2007 to more than 1,800 units shipped through March 2008. This shouldn’t come us a surprise. It was back in June 2007 that irst signs started to point to video (any kind of IP video) as the savior for Cisco.

Graphic_rating_buy CSCO   Communications Equipment: Goldman Turns Cautious; Downgrades Juniper, Aruba, Starent; Bullish On Cisco

Goldman Sachs has turned cautious on the communications equipment sector.

Goldman’s Simona Jankowski is assuming coverage of some companies in the group, and in the process lowering the firm’s view of the sector to Neutral from Attractive. (Jankowski takes over from Brantley Thompson, who is going to the buy side.) She picks up coverage of Cisco (CSCO) with a Buy rating, and adds the stock to the firm’s Conviction List; she also picks up Juniper Network (JNPR), and cut her rating to Neutral from Buy. She’ll also be covering Motorola (which is currently rated) and Buy-rated Qualcomm (QCOM) and Research in Motion (RIMM).

CSCO   Major March Short Interest Increases

We routinely look over major changes in short interest from period to period. While the more frequent twice-monthly reporting is conducted by exchanges, it sometimes gives a little insight into the psyche of traders and trends. The most important issue to look at is in the larger and more active names that have large positions that grew rapidly in percentage terms.

CSCO   Coming Soon: The Cisco Blade Server?

The movement toward blade servers in the enterprise data center has been growing steadily for some time, backed by manufacturers like IBM and HP. But expect to soon see networking giant Cisco Systems enter this market as well, setting themselves up for a tense battle with blade server manufacturers for control of the enterprise data center.

We have been hearing the same claim for the last couple of years, that CSCO will have a big piece of the online video explosion, but we have yet to see any real tangibles. We own CSCO, and are building position for when the technology sector gets back on its feet, just hope it comes sooner then later (4Q 08)
