There is no doubt that today was a rough day in the market, especially for us perpetually optimistic stock traders who have yet to develop an affinity for the short side. But was the market's performance really that bad -- our bruised and battered equity curves notwithstanding?

Recently, I started using StockFetcher to scan for new 20-day lows and highs as part of my effort to implement John Carter's HOLP and LOHP swing trading strategy, as outlined in his book Mastering the Trade.

After running the scans tonight, I decided to plug the numbers into a spreadsheet to see if I could learn anything from the day-to-day swings in the number of stocks hitting those 20-day benchmarks.
