Sprint is rolling out slew of SMARTPHONES including the "Sprint Hero" based on Google Android Software. Also a Samsung Roll Out coming soon. Release to the public on the "HERO" will be October 11, 2009. They are rolling out several smartphones anyone of which may very well be a worthy competitor to the "IPHONE". Smartphones should be a disruptive technology in the short and the long term. They will be capable of providing all our need in respect to telephone, TV, video, messaging, storage, etc., within a brief time. I think Apple's explosive rise and in the market during the past 2 years would indicate how a single technology (smartphones) can drive a stock’s value. Certainly, it's PCs and Laptops are not driving the stock. What is driving it is the area that Sprint's product or any other worthy competitor can attack. That would be their cell phone technology and most importantly their "I Tunes" store. A case in point would be the rise of PALM (PLM) during the past 10 months. Their market cap has quadrupled during that time base upon the introduction of a smartphone that is believed to be a worthy competitor. Unlike Apple or Palm, Sprint does not manufacture the hardware, however it does provide an offering of "SMARTPHONES" that can attach and dismantle the dominance of the "IPHONE". If the IPHONE is weakened then so to will the "I TUNES" store. Based solely on upcoming product and news and without regard to its current straits, I would anticipate a bump up in value of Sprint in the upcoming months. Should there product line in fact disrupt the current Apple hegemony, I would consider it a longer term investment. An important ally in this goal and I would not underestimate their resolve would be GOOGLE. I think they need to knock APPLE off their perch and try to return a degree of control of the smartphone market to the CELL PHONE service providers other then AT&T.
