Aerospace company Boeing has announced that the commercial launch of GeoEye Inc.'s GeoEye-1 earth-imaging satellite is scheduled for September 4 aboard a Delta II rocket.

The launch will take place from Space Launch Complex-2 at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, with a launch window of 84 seconds opening at 11:50:57 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time.

GeoEye-1 will have the highest resolution of any commercial imaging system capable of collecting images, with a ground resolution of 0.41-meters, or 16 inches, in the panchromatic or black and white mode, 1.65 meters in multispectral (color) imagery mode. General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems built the GeoEye-1.

Boeing Launch Services procured the launch vehicle, a Delta II 7420-10 rocket, and associated support services from United Launch Alliance. Boeing expects the launch vehicle to deploy GeoEye-1 approximately 58 minutes after liftoff.

Update 09/03:

GEOY- Now or Never

GEOY's spy satellite is scheduled for launch tomorrow morning. If you are considering buying or selling this stock you should do it today. After the launch, assuming it is successful, the stock will trade up sharply or down sharply if it isn't, however, the odds greatly favor a successful one. I think near term you have an event that will likely add 10-15 pts to the stock. You can watch the launch live by going to this link:

Update 09/03:

Launch date slips due to Hurricane Hana

sorry, I didn't see that Hurricane Hana has caused the launch to be delayed. I recommend you go to the companies website and sign up for their news releases as to when it will be rescheduled. It look like it won't go before September 7th at this point. Although, the day has slipped a little giving you a little more time to try to time your purchase or sale the thesis remains the same. This launch will be a corporate event that will, if successful, will significantly impact free cash flow in a very positive way. My experience has been that companies with rapidly growing free cash flow trade up sharply. I am long and waiting on the launch.

GeoEye-1 Launched Successfully

We are pleased to announce the successful launch and deployment of GeoEye-1, the world’s highest resolution commercial Earth imaging satellite.

GeoEye’s ground station in Norway relayed the downlink signal it received from GeoEye-1 confirming that the satellite successfully separated from the second stage of the launch vehicle and began automatically initializing its onboard systems. Bill Schuster, GeoEye chief operating officer said “based upon the data we saw the satellite is performing properly and ready to begin the next phase towards meeting its mission requirements.” GeoEye-1 will now undergo a calibration and check-out period before imagery products will be available for sale.

Matthew O’Connell, GeoEye chief executive officer, said, “Later this fall, we will start providing high resolution color imagery of the Earth from our newest satellite to customers around the globe. The imagery from GeoEye-1 adds to the quantity and quality of that currently provided by our IKONOS satellite, and together this magnificent constellation will enable us to meet world-wide customer demand.”

GeoEye-1 will simultaneously collect 0.41-meter ground resolution black-and-white (panchromatic) images and 1.65-meter color (multispectral) images. Designed to take digital images of the Earth from 423 miles (681 kilometers) and moving at a speed of about four-and-a-half miles (seven kilometers) per second, the satellite camera can distinguish objects on the Earth’s surface as small as 0.41-meter or 16 inches in size. Due to U.S. licensing restrictions, commercial customers will get access to imagery at half-meter ground resolution.

GeoEye-1 was built by General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems in Gilbert , Arizona . The imaging system was built by ITT in Rochester , New York . The 4310-pound satellite was launched at 11:50 a.m. PDT on a United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California . The launch of GeoEye-1 marks the 83 ^rd consecutive successful launch of the Delta II rocket.

GeoEye-1 offers a considerable improvement in resolution over GeoEye's current satellite, Ikonos, which has been operating for a decade. Its resolution is 1 meter for panchromatic images and 4 meters for multispectral imagery.
