The Carbon Materials and Chemicals segment engages in the distillation of coal tar in North America, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Scandinavia. It manufactures carbon pitch used in the production of aluminum and steel; phthalic anhydride used in the production of plasticizers and polyester resins; creosote and carbon black feedstock used in the treatment of wood or as a feedstock in the production of carbon black; carbon black used in the manufacture of rubber tires; naphthalene used primarily as a surfactant in the production of concrete; and furnace coke used in steel and iron production. This segment also sells refined tars, benzole, specialty chemicals, and commercial roofing. The Railroad and Utility Products segment markets commercial wood treatment products primarily to railroad and public utility markets in the United States and Australia. Its products include procuring and treating items, such as crossties, switch ties, and various types of lumber used for railroad bridges and crossings. This segment also offers utility products, which include transmission and distribution poles for electric and telephone utilities; and piling used in industrial foundations, beach housing, docks, and piers. The company, formerly known as KI Holdings, Inc., was founded in 1988 and is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
