| American Equity Investment Life Holding Company, through its subsidiaries, engages in the development, marketing, issuance, and administration of annuities and life insurance in the United States and the District of Columbia. The company underwrites annuity and insurance products, as well as collects renewal premiums on certain accident and health insurance policies. Its products include index annuities that enable policyholders to link returns to the performance of a particular index without the risk of loss of their principal; fixed rate deferred annuities that involve the tax-deferred accumulation of interest on premiums paid by the policyholder; fixed rate annuities, under which the annual interest rate is guaranteed for up to a five-year period; and single premium immediate annuities. The company also offers life insurance products that include traditional ordinary and term, universal life, and other interest-sensitive life insurance products. It markets its products through a brokerage distribution network of national marketing organizations and independent agents. The company was founded in 1995 and is based in West Des Moines, Iowa.
