San Jose-based Immersion started grabbing headlines when it sued Sony for patent infringement of its “haptics technology,” the popular software that makes Playstation game controllers rumble and vibrate. When Sony eventually decided to settle the lawsuit in February 2007, it was ordered to pay Immersion $90.7 million plus interest and future licensing fees.
Immersion’s touch-screen technology is also a potential gold mine. By 2012, about 40% of all cell phones will have touch screens, according to Global Research and Strategy Analytics. Immersion has already inked deals with Samsung and Nokia, and Motorola is rumored to be next. In fact, the Samsung deal alone could land Immersion over $200 million.
These numbers are enormous considering total revenue in 2006 was $27.5 million. It’s further proof that if Immersion continues at its current pace, it won’t be a small-cap company for long
