The biotech names have lagged latly but they typically do well during ressesions and market downturns so they might be due for another leg up. The biggest thing to consider with drug companies is what drugs do they have in the pipline because thats what is going to generate their earnings going forward

PFE is starting to look better, if you dont have biotech exposure this might be a good time to start legging into this name.

I think so, it is a strong company, but you have to consider what they are developing and how long the FDA will hold up production of the new product.

Biotech typically out performs in recessions but I would be wary on the political front as expensive health care will certainly be an important issue

To answer your question simply, yes. The market is down right now and have brought this stock down with it. Once things settle the stock will go back up because people will still need drugs and therefor the earnings will stay the same. Just stick with it, they have great drugs like Viagra that will always bring in the money.

No.IMHO Pfizer may not be a good buy until Obama is voted in and the health care cuts are brought into effect. There would be socialization of medicine and drug manufacturer profits would be cut. There is a creeping trend towards Walmart style low cost medicine and this would only increase as the Baby Boomer cost starts kicking in.With a budget deficit in trillions, current health care spend is not sustainable.Obama can increase taxes by so much even then it would not suffice as the youngsters would prefer the money to spend on the crumbling infrastructure.I would rather invest in European drug makers where there is more earnings visibility and more drugs in the pipeline.Novartis is in the final stages of bringing out a vaccine against Type B Meningococcal meningitis (a common fatal type of brain infection which had no vaccine available previously). There is no doubt that pharma is a massive buying opportunity as many drugs are coming off patent. This might seem counter intuitive because it will lead to lower earnings for some years. But generics is a low margin business and like fire needing oxygen to sustain itself, generic manufacturers will need drugs to steal ahem copy. The generics business has seen its heyday and like the candle which burns bright before going out it will have its final flame and then decline.Ranbaxy understood this and sold out.In the meantime the large drug makers will be under severe pressure and the weak ones (no drugs in the pipeline) will suffer.Bottomline-wait for clarity on US stocks, invest like Warren Buffett in GSK,Sanofi Aventis.

A good write up about Novartis

I generally avoid buying stocks in the news but a strong pipeline is what will make stocks outperform.

Short term, PFE is making a bullish, rounding bottom formation. All it needs now is an upside breakout on volume to warrant a high-risk, short-term speculation. However, in the intermediate and long term perspective, this issue is still trending downwards and needs some appreciable basing work before its investment qualities can come to the fore. By the way, I calculate fair market value of PFE to be 22.89, so the more it declines, the better the ultimate value play.
